In a groundbreaking initiative, the Future African Scientist community has embarked on an enlightening journey through the realms of biotechnology, led by none other than Professor Harvey Lodish from MIT. With a legacy of teaching two Nobel laureates and founding several biotech startups, Professor Lodish brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to these lectures.

Understanding the Science and Business of Biotechnology

Our first session on April 29th, 2024, marked the beginning of a ten-part series aimed at unraveling the complexities of biotechnology. The goal of this course is to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of the latest scientific and engineering advancements in biotechnology. The sessions will delve into the scientific, medical, and business aspects of founding and growing a biotech company, highlighting the myriad career opportunities in this dynamic field.

A Vision for the Future

By integrating knowledge from finance, science, engineering, and business development, this course aspires to foster interdisciplinary collaboration among future leaders. We hope to inspire a new generation of scientists and entrepreneurs who will leverage biotechnology to address Africa's most pressing challenges.

About the Speaker: Professor Harvey Lodish

Professor Harvey Lodish is a towering figure in molecular cell biology and biotechnology entrepreneurship, with over five decades of pioneering research. His early work on mRNA translation regulation and plasma membrane glycoprotein biogenesis laid the foundation for his later research on cloning and characterizing crucial proteins and RNAs for red cell development and function. Notably, his lab was the first to clone mRNAs for various hormone receptors and proteins essential for glucose transport and adipose cell function. Even after closing his lab in 2020, Professor Lodish continues to share his expertise through award-winning teaching and mentoring.

The Importance of This Lecture Series

The significance of these sessions lies in their unique blend of science and entrepreneurship, providing a holistic perspective on biotechnology's potential to transform healthcare and industry. Participants will gain insights into developing innovative solutions to some of Africa's most urgent challenges.

Highlights from the First Session

The inaugural session focused on vaccine development, particularly mRNA vaccines, a timely topic given the global focus on immunization. Held on April 29th, 2024, at 9:00 AM Boston Time (4:00 PM East African Time / 2:00 PM West African Time), this session saw enthusiastic participation from over ten African countries, including South Sudan, Uganda, Nigeria, Tanzania, Sudan, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Zambia, Ethiopia, and Cameroon. The lecture was followed by a vibrant Q&A session, reflecting the participants' keen interest and engagement.

Upcoming Sessions

The excitement doesn't stop here. Future sessions will cover a diverse range of topics, including:

- Adeno-associated virus (AAV) vectors and in vivo gene therapy
- Ex vivo gene therapies for sickle cell anemia and beta-thalassemia
- Recombinant therapeutic proteins
- Chemically modified nucleic acids as therapeutics
- Therapeutic monoclonal antibodies
- Cell therapies and immuno-oncology, including CAR-T cells
- CRISPR, base editing, and prime editing for treating human diseases and modifying agricultural plants
- Tevard Biosciences and therapies for haploinsufficient genetic disorders
- New technologies and building successful biotechnology companies: A personal history
