As the African continent continues to grapple with the persistent threat of mosquito-borne diseases like malaria, innovative solutions are crucial in the fight against this deadly menace. At Mbarara University of Science and Technology in Uganda, a team of young scientists has developed an exciting new product: Spark-Mox, a natural mosquito repellent cream.
I am Mukasa Benjamin Kabuuza, a third-year student at Mbarara University of Science and Technology, pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences. Alongside my colleague Munyama Doreen, a first-year student in the same program, we were granted an opportunity by Future African Scientists (FAS) to showcase some of the innovations we've been working on. Together, we led a team to create Spark-Mox, a revolutionary mosquito repellent cream.
Mosquitoes are notorious blood-sucking insects and vectors for several deadly pathogens, including those that cause malaria, dengue fever, yellow fever, and more. In developing countries like Uganda, mosquitoes present a significant obstacle to tourism and socioeconomic development. Malaria alone accounts for 250 million cases annually and approximately 800,000 deaths, with 85% of these fatalities being children under five years old.
In response to this pressing issue, our team, consisting of students pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences, came together to develop a product that not only adds value to local produce but also offers therapeutic benefits. Through extensive research, we discovered that lemon grass oil and eucalyptus oil possess mosquito-repellent properties. We formulated Spark-Mox using these essential oils, combined with beeswax, coconut oil, and shea butter as a base. The result is a cream that, when applied to the skin, repels mosquitoes, reducing bites and the risk of mosquito-borne diseases like malaria.
The journey to create Spark-Mox has been both challenging and rewarding. We faced several limitations, including a lack of proper guidance on some concepts and inadequate resources to produce a high-quality mosquito repellent cream. However, our association with Future African Scientists (FAS) has been a beacon of hope. We are excited to work with them to overcome these challenges and take our innovation to greater heights.
Spark-Mox represents a promising solution to the pressing problem of mosquito-borne diseases. Unlike traditional synthetic repellents, Spark-Mox is safe, eco-friendly, and accessible to communities across Uganda. It has shown good traction and has received a positive reception during laboratory testing stages. However, to fully realize the potential of this product, we call on support, funding, and professional advice to refine and enhance Spark-Mox.
Through collaboration with Future African Scientists (FAS), we aspire to push this product to greater heights and make a meaningful impact in the fight against mosquito-borne diseases. Together, we can protect our communities and create a healthier future for all.
